Taking a walk in the great outdoors is said to be fantastic for your physical and mental welfare, but if your pants are chafing, making you sweaty or ripping under the demands on your hike those benefits can soon disappear.

Picking the right hiking pants isn't just about getting the right size and what they look like, the right fabrics can offer stretch, durability, protection against the elements, and even insect repellent to keep ticks and mosquitoes away.

We ventured out into the wilderness to find you the best pants for your adventures, whether you need something rugged or something that looks just as at home in the office.

How we test

When we test outdoor products there's no substitute to putting them through their paces, quite literally, out in the wild. For hiking pants that means wearing them for miles over differing terrain and in different weather conditions to see how they stand up to heat, cold, rain and whatever else the world can throw at them.

We also assess the material to see how well it stretches, feels and generates rub. Plus, we also look into the care instructions to check everything is machine washable and how resistant it is to staining so we can be sure what happens on the trail, stays on the trail.

Why trust us

Between us, the Buyline team has decades of product testing experience and Tim has been professionally testing products since 2008, designing and applying scientific testing processes to ensure his reviews are unbiased, robust, honest and above all, helpful to the reader.

Our verdict

Topping our performance scores was the Teren Traveler pants providing excellent hiking performance, being easy to care for and on top of that, looking great both on the trail or even in an office, making it our best overall pick.

The Fjallraven Keb pants came just behind in our testing and would definitely be our top pick in colder weather or on particularly demanding hikes as their added durability would be appreciated, but they also come with a significantly higher price tag.

At the more affordable end of the scale, the Columbia ROC chinos deliver fantastic toughness and comfort while being versatile to wear in most situations and the Mammut Hiking V pants are also a great budget choice.
